Is the SSD optimizer in use – why always slower after a few months was used a laptop or NetBook? SSDs (solid state drives) are extremely fast. But why is this only for a short time? Why is a laptop or NetBook getting slower after a few months was used? The reason for this lies in the design of most PC operating systems that have been developed for traditional hard drives. They are however not designed to make optimal use of SSD and NAND Flash. For these drives, the drive performance over time deteriorated dramatically and this is due mainly to fragmentation. If there is free memory areas, which are distributed across the disk, the file system will split a file and write in fragments in these free areas. However, if free space is fragmented, so this results in NAND Flash easily to a slower write speed and extra I/O. Testing of SSDs from different vendors has determined the Diskeeper Corporation that by this fragmentation the Write speed up to 80% will affect. Under NTFS, for example, the widely used Windows file system, the writing speed while rising of I/O operations decreases significantly and quickly.
Under NTFS free space is fragmented relatively quickly within a few months. And even then the fragmentation increasing further. The write speed on such a system to the extent it decreases as fragmentation increases. Therefore new SSDs often initially create a write speed of 80 MB / s, but deteriorate after a few weeks at 35 MB / s. A few months later the speed reaches frightening 10 MB / s. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the slow write performance affected also the startup time on the SSD drive. Also, the drive is strongly strained due to the additional write activity caused by the fragmentation, which leads to a shorter life.
